The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Biodefense Category A, B, & C Priority Pathogens

The NIAID funds many hundreds of millions in dollars for research each year and the following listing of priority pathogens is provided for your information. The NIAID is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The NIAID is also the lead Institute for Project BioShield implementation at the NIH. DHHS, via the NIAID, will launch a multi-year initiative for Project BioShield treatments for biological agents emphasizing accelerated product development. This initiative will be focused on the most dangerous biological pathogens and the toxins they produce.
