New center addresses homeland defense
The Rocky Mountain Center for Homeland Defense
Denver, Colorado U.S. The University of
Denver has established the Rocky Mountain Center for Homeland
Defense as part of its efforts to maintain an active role in the
community and contribute to the security of Colorado and the western
U.S. The center is the brainchild of Dr. Andrew Ternay, Professor
of Chemistry at DU. Dr. Ternay has long worked in the area of
defense against weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) for WRAIR and
most recently for the USAMRICD. Dr. Ternay persuaded University
officials that DU should be the University for Denver, not the
University of Denver, and that faculty and staff at the university
had unique qualifications and experiences to bring to bear on
the issue of homeland defense and security. Dr. Murray Hamilton,
whose expertise is in medical countermeasures to WMDs, will direct
the Center. Hamilton joins DU from the Defence Research and Development
Canada-Suffield (DRDC-Suffield), the primary Canadian center for
defense research into countermeasures to WMDs. (cont. p. 21 -

First Announcement for the 10th CBMTS Meeting.
CBRMTS - Industry III
Second World Congress on Chemical, Biological, Radiological
Terrorism
Dubrovnik, Croatia
7-12 September 2003
Excelsior Hotel, Dubrovnik. The CBRMTS
- Industry III, in coordination with the Croatian Organizing
Committee, and under the auspices of the Government of Croatia,
is very pleased to present this extremely important meeting,
World II, on the topic of chemical, biological, radiological
terrorism and anti-terrorism matters.
This
Congress as a follow-on to the very prophetic World I in Dubrovnik
in April 2001, will again explore the scientific, medical
and policy aspects of chemical, biological, radiological terrorism
and consider the effects of terrorism on the community and
individuals, military and civilian, and on the infrastructure
at each echelon of government. Industry III will also build
on the base of knowledge established at CBMTS - Industry II
"The First World Congress on Chemical and Biological
Terrorism" in April 2001 when the CBMTS recognized that
one particular area was not addressed by convention, agreement
or treaty: the terrorist or combat threat to the chemical,
petrochemical, oil, pharmaceutical, biochemical, food and
other industries. That First World Congress was exceptionally
prophetic; it specifically covered the requirements and actions
needed for proper response to 9/11 tragedies -- four and one
half months prior to 9/11.
Note:
This Second World Congress is again planning a pre-Congress
Workshop on Saturday 06 September 2003, which will be open
to all Congress participants. Additional details will be announced
soon via the CBRMTS e-mail network and will be in ASA 02-6.
