The First Singapore International Symposium on

Protection Against Toxic Chemicals (SISPAT)

2-4 December 1998, Goodwood Park Hotel, Singapore

2-4 December 1997 The First SISPAT, organised by the DSO National Laboratories, promises to be a significant event for scientists, engineers and professionals from all over the world.

This Symposium is intended for those engaged in research and development in the fields of protection against toxic chemicals. Participation in the Symposium is by invitation only. As of today, a total of 150 registrations have been received and accepted by the organising committees.

The Symposium will feature 30 oral presentations and 20 poster presentations in the areas of detection and verification, physical protection, decontamination, biomedical treatment and simulant research. The Symposium proceedings with compilation of the manuscripts and abstracts will be given to the Symposium participants during registration.

In addition to the presentations, the Symposium participants will also be treated to an exclusive tour of DSO’s new building for chemical defence research, which have just been officially declared opened by the Minister for Defence on 2 October 98. The building houses more than 10 laboratories and instrument rooms that are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for chemical defence research.

Pre-Symposium Meeting

Prior to the symposium, there will be a pre-symposium meeting co-sponsored and co-hosted by the OPCW to discuss the designation of laboratories for the verification tasks of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Held on 1 Dec 98 from 1330-1530, a total of 7 papers will be presented. The meeting will end with a round table discussion.

The Pre-symposium Meeting is opened to all participants of the 1st SISPAT

Social Programmes

A series of social programmes has also been lined up for the Symposium participants. An informal get-together will be held on the evening of 1 Dec 98 at the poolside of Goodwood Park Hotel to provide an opportunity for the participants to get to know each other before the Symposium starts.

A Symposium Reception in the form of stand up buffet will be held at the Night Safari, an exciting attraction of Singapore, on the evening of 2 Dec 98, where the participants will be given a sumptuous treat of local flare. Last but not least, an excursion to the Singapore Discovery Centre and the SAFTI Military Institute will be organised on the last day of the Symposium.

Visitors to the Singapore Discovery Centre can expect to experience fun and entertainment through high-tech and interactive exhibits that showcases Singapore’s milestones and achievements. The SAFTI Military Institute is the worldÌs first tri-service training institute for officers under one roof, training Singapore Armed ForcesÌ officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force.

About Singapore

Singapore is in the tropics, hence it experiences summer throughout the year. The temperature range during the day is from 24C to 33C. When outdoors, dress light as it can get very hot and humid in the middle of the day. Singapore has a frequent and comprehensive bus network and a convenient Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) subway system. There is also a good supply of taxis and all are metered. If a rented car is required, all major car rental companies have branches here. Transfers between Changi International Airport and downtown hotels are provided by the Air-Bus service that operates from the airport as well. Places worth visiting in Singapore for shopping of traditional handicrafts and immersion into our culture are Chinatown, Arab Street, Little India. Upmarket shopping can be found in Orchard Road.
