The National Medical Stockpiles Workshop
Saturday 6 September 2003
This nteractive Workshop on National Medical Stockpiles
will be held in conjunction with CBMTS-Industry III in
Dubrovnik, Croatia.
I. How can nations work with private pharmaceutical
manufacturers to develop new vaccines and next-generation
treatments? The purpose of this session is to stimulate
group discussion on issues facing manufacturers including
liability issues, financial constraints, research and
development, collaboration with governmental agencies,
partnerships in private industry, long and short term
commitments necessary to produce vaccines and new drugs
in general.
NOTE: Each session (I., II., III., etc) will be followed
by a 10 minute presentation by pharmaceutical
corporations on related topics.
II. General overview of applied medical practice in a
terrorist event: CBMTS will have a physician present on
the use of combined therapies in response to the
inhalation anthrax infections in the US in 2001. The
purpose of this brief presentation will be to underline
the role of clinical medicine and the need for stockpiles
anywhere in the world to be able to purchase new drugs as
their use is found to be effective. The audience will
explore issues surrounding emergency use of
pharmaceuticals & other countermeasures in a
terrorism event. NOTE: Presentation #2 by a
pharmaceutical industry representative.
III. Regulatory Issues: How do individual country
regulations affect the ability of countries to stockpile
drugs, vaccines and medical equipment? The purpose of
this session is to open discussions on how food and
drug/medical regulations in each country affect the
stockpiling of medicines. NOTE: Presentation #3 by
pharmaceutical industry representative.
IV. CDC's National Pharmaceutical Stockpile Program will
share a planning guide for use by individual or
partnering nations who wish to stockpile pharmaceuticals,
vaccines, medical supplies and equipment. Hard-copy and
CD-ROMs of the guide will be provided at the workshop.
Sunday 7 September 2003. Tentative plans call for a
continuation of the Workshop on Sunday 7 September to
answer follow-on questions and concerns of the
participants at the Workshop. Additionally, we plan to
showcase our Industry sponsors during this Sunday
